Begalin Mazhit Sapargalievich (1922-1978) - Kazakh film director, participant in the Great Patriotic War, Honored Art Worker of the Kazakh SSR.

He was born on February 22, 1922 in the village of Degelen in the Abralin district of the Semipalatinsk region (now the East Kazakhstan region) in the family of the outstanding Kazakh writer Sapargali Begalin.

When Mazhit was eight years old, the whole family moved to Alma-Ata (now Almaty), where a stable life was to begin, but the war made its own adjustments. Mazhit was drafted into the army right after the last school bell. After completing courses for junior commanders of cavalry artillery, in September 1941 he was at the front.

Mazhit Begalin served in the legendary 100th separate Kazakh rifle brigade. In one of the battles on the Kalinin front, his hand was torn off. In the spring of 1943, Mazhit was demobilized. In the same year he entered VGIK, in the workshop of S. A. Gerasimov and T. F. Makarova. In 1948 he successfully graduated from the directing department of VGIK. After graduation, he worked at the Mosfilm film studio, was the second director in the films The Young Guard, which was shot by his teacher Sergei Gerasimov, and in The Fall of Berlin by Mikhail Chiaureli.

Returning to Kazakhstan, in 1950-1978, Mazhit Begalin worked as an artistic director and director at the Kazakhfilm film studio. He is the author of feature films about his contemporaries, Kazakh workers of the late 20th century: “It was at dawn” (1955), “Return to the earth” (1959), “The trail of the tulpar” (1964).

Director's skill of Mazhit Begalin manifested itself in films of the historical and biographical genre. His films “It was in Shugla”, “His time will come”, “Traces go beyond the horizon”, “Song of Manshuk”, “Moscow is behind us”, “Steppe peals” entered the treasury of Kazakh cinema.

For his creative activity, Mazhit Sapargalievich Begalin was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the Kazakh SSR (1966). He was awarded the Orders of the Red Banner of Labor and the Badge of Honor.

M. S. Begalin passed away on May 5, 1978. Buried in Almaty.

Documentary films were made about the work of director Begalin: “Mazhit Begalin” (1981, dir. A. T. Ashrapov), “When the soul cannot be silent” (2012, dir. B. Nusimbekov).
